What To Look For In A Franchise That Fits Your Lifestyle | Mike McRitchie | Resume and LinkedIn Profile Writer

If you want to start a business but you don’t want to have to start from scratch, you’ve probably considered investing in a franchise – after all, there are loads out there, and there’s going to be something to suit your budget. Plus, it means the groundwork has already been done for you, the systems are in place, and, depending on what you buy, people will already know who you are. It just means you’re starting further forward than you would if you built your own business, and those few (often quite large) steps can make all the difference.

Of course, a lot of choice is a good thing in many ways, but it can also be a problem because it means you’ve got to make sure you’re choosing well – most of the time, people can only buy one franchise due to budget and time. So with that in mind, here are some things to look for in a franchise to ensure it fits your lifestyle; read on to find out more.

Not every franchise is going to ask you to put in the same amount of time – some need you to be really hands-on from morning until night, and others let you delegate tasks or even offer the opportunity for a passive income. So what’s going to work for you? What do you like the sound of best? What’s going to fit in with your current schedule?

In the end, you’ve got to choose a franchise that suits your routine, and if you like to have weekends free, choosing something that’s open on a Saturday isn’t a great idea, for example. Once you’ve found something that works, it should go on your shortlist, but there are other things to think about as well.

What is it you really care about? That’s the next thing to consider when you’re picking a franchise – the fact is that running a business, even if the first steps have been done for you, is hard if you’re not passionate about what you’re doing and selling, so it’s crucial to choose a franchise that matches your values, otherwise you’ll get bored and disillusioned pretty quickly, leading to burnout or walking away altogether (which can be financially devastating).

If you love being healthy and you’re into fitness, looking at healthy food franchises makes a lot of sense, for example. You’ll be able to understand what the business is about, and you’ll be able to show your customers you’re passionate about what you do, which can really make a difference when it comes to building trust and gaining a good reputation. And since there are so many options, you’re sure to find at least one that matches what you stand for.

If there’s one thing you need to know before starting any kind of business it’s how long you’ll be able to run it for. We know you can’t see the future perfectly, but with some research you can definitely get a good idea of what’s what, and that’s what you’ll need to do.

Picking a franchise that’s popular right now is great, but will it still be popular in a decade? A year? A few months? If you’re getting into a franchise that’s based on what might turn out to be a passing fad, you may not make your money back, and it’s certainly going to be hard to keep going. That’s why you need to think about the longevity of what you’re getting into, and, although you can’t be sure, give it your best guess.
