Feeling like you’re hitting a wall in your career? This #short dives into the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, no matter how hard you work, the top of the ladder just isn’t reachable at your current company. We’ll touch on potential reasons why your job might have a ceiling and what you can do about it if you’re ready for more growth.

A Promotion Isn’t Owed To You

Let me be clear, you are not going to climb the ladder and be successful at your current employer. You may get a promotion, do more work, that’s fine, but if you think you’re going to rise up from being a staff-level individual into the C-suite, you’re nuts. You’re deluding yourself and you’ve bought into this old, old belief based upon TV shows from the 1950s and 60s that this is possible. It isn’t. Tell me about any situation where you’ve seen someone rise up and I’ll point to it being an exception, because if it were normal, we wouldn’t hear about the exceptions. It would just happen.

Instead, what you need to do is be strategic and keep an eye out for roles that make sense for you. After all, the person who gets ahead isn’t always the smartest, they don’t always work the hardest. Those are great qualities to have, but it’s not what’s going to work for you. What is going to work is being alert to opportunities. Sometimes those are internal to your organization, most of the time they’re external.
