Use the break or slower holiday season to upskill your AI skills. With the increasing changes in the workplace, one thing we can control is our professional development. What skills need updating? Let’s start with some AI prompts for job search.

Jump into the AI water! Whether you choose ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or some other tool is up to you. But as the article on AI prompts in this week’s summary says, your choice should be based on what you need to be done.

For research, I’m going to encourage you to use Perplexity.ai because it provides the sources and is less likely to hallucinate.

Here are some popular prompts you may want to test:

RESEARCHING ALTERNATIVE JOB TITLES

Prompt: “What alternative job titles could someone who was a [your job title]?”

RESEARCHING JOB TITLES IN NEW INDUSTRY

Prompt: “What job titles are similar to [current job] in [new industry]?”

TARGET COMPANIES

Prompt: “What are the top 25 companies in the [industry] industry that are located in [city, metro area]?”

RESUME WRITING

Match Existing Resume To Job Posting
Prompt: “Using the job description and my resume pasted below, which skills or experience are not mentioned on my resume [paste job posting and resume].”

Headline
Prompt: “Write a headline for [Job Title] that includes these keywords [A, B, C] and includes this accomplishment [insert accomplishment].”

Summary
Prompt: “Create a compelling professional summary for a job application using my resume and the job description below as a reference, and keep it to 500 characters or less. [Copy/paste your existing resume and the job description.]”

Bullets
Prompt: “Write a resume bullet for a [TITLE] position that describes impact and uses metrics. Include at least 2 of these keywords: [A, B, C, D, E, F]. [Copy/paste the top 5 hard and/or soft skills]”
*Click “Regenerate” to create more versions

Prompt 1: “You are a recruiter evaluating resumes for the job posting below. What are the keywords, skills or experience you want to see on a resume for this job [paste job description]”

Prompt 2: “You are a professional resume writer creating a resume for the job posting below. What keywords, skills and experiences would you include on the resume for this job [paste job description]”

INTERVIEW PREP

Prompt: “What behavioral job interview questions can I expect for this job [inserted job posting]?”

  • Always proofread and edit any work created by AI tools.
  • Verify the information provided is accurate.
  • If you don’t like the results, regenerate, retry, or revise the prompt.

One of the biggest turnoffs from employers is the overly generic language of AI-generated resumes. Readers want context, which doesn’t happen with content produced by AI. A little-known feature is LinkedIn’s Build a Resume. But not to build a resume you will use to apply to jobs, but to help you identify key skills to put in your profile. These are skills recruiters are likely looking for and will increase your profile views. (You can have up to 100 skills in your profile headline, About, Experience and Skills sections.)
