Thanks to the digital world. job scams are on the rise. Join me as I share what you need to know and how you can avoid them.

In early 2020 we peered into the changing online world with COVID and emerging access to AI and projected a need for education around scams.

We began publishing resources to help educate job seekers around industry scams while simultaneously guiding professional resume writers and career coaches to take steps to help job seekers verify them. (Links to these in resources below)

We’ve continued to talk about this in CDI events, our livestream show, and through social media.

A few short weeks ago the rise of job scams seriously hit our radar with a member experiencing an attempted scam on a family member.

That led to the education committee finalizing a survey that goes out right after the TORI submission deadline to our members to gather their experiences and strategies.

But I fast-forwarded after opening our email inbox at CDI today….

“Nearly 14 million Americans are duped by employment scams every year, resulting in a staggering $2 billion in losses.”

That’s what Midhat Tilawat cited from a recent BBB report in the VPNRanks statistical report yesterday, Online Job Scam Statistics: The Dark Side of Job Hunting Could Cost Us $100 Million by 2025.

As the report shares, this isn’t a US-only issue but one with huge ramifications for job seekers globally.

In this special show I cover:

  • Red flags of common job scams and what they look like.
  • Where job scams are most often found online including the rise of deepfake.
  • Who the victims of job scams are, which populations are at greatest risk, and the average cost to these individuals.
  • Steps you can use to protect yourself from job scams/what you need to know if you work with and advise job seekers as a career coach or other career industry practitioner.
  • Links to CDI free resources resume writers and career coaches can use to help educate job seekers about picking a quality service and steps you can take to make sure job seekers pick and trust you.
