How do you find the time to stay inspired, acquire new knowledge, and innovate in your work?

Interview Like an Expert: Learn an Interview Framework That Makes a Difference

I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter, the head coach for JobSearchCoachingHQ.com, a site with curated information that you can watch, listen to or read. It’s going to help you find work more quickly. In addition, I do one on one coaching with people to help you perform at a high level both during your job search and once you’re on your new job and beyond.

And someone forwarded a question to me that I’ve since found is used by Amazon as part of their interviewing. I think it’s a wonderful question that goes . . . the full version of the question is, how do you find the time to stay inspired, acquire new knowledge and innovate in your work? Great question. And you almost have to break it apart into different components.

And it really starts off with the theater of interviewing. So, I want to encourage you to start off by putting a twinkle in your eyes and a smile on your face and just delight as you answer the question because this is so unusual that a firm really cares about a person. So, when you answer the question, start off with, it is so much easier to stay inspired when I love my work.

And I really do enjoy it. I just think there are limitations as to where I can go with my organization. So, if I allow that to continue, it eventually will wear me down.

So, part of the reason I’m looking for work is I want to stay feeling this way. I want to still have the juice about my work. And I just think over time, doing the same things over and over again, it’s going to leave me limited.

And I also know that I have to do things for myself. So, how do I make the time? Well, I make the time. And part of the way I make the time is I do classes.

There’s plenty of stuff online that I can learn from. I talk with people. I get together with people in a variety of different venues, not just simply to tell jokes and be funny, but to look for people who are really exciting for me to connect with.

See where I’m going here? It’s not simply about reciting a bunch of facts. Well, I’m going for my master’s degree. And I find my master’s degree very interesting.

No, if you are going, I’m not trying to be disrespectful. But it’s about the energy that you carry yourself with. And the delight on your face as you answer the question about what keeps you going, what floats your boat, what gets your competitive juices going.

And innovating your work. Part of that is taking time and taking time and space to let ideas ruminate. That’s how it works for me.

It may work differently for you. But I’m trying to give you a couple of ideas of ways that you can approach this. Now, the big thing, again, is not just what you say, but your acting, your enthusiasm as you talk, because you want to demonstrate that this is exciting for you, that they’re actually caring about how you stay inspired.

And I want to be clear. Inspiration is an internal quality. Motivation is what they have to do to make you do your job.

As an engaged employee, you want to be inspired. You want to have something that you really connect with that’s meaningful to you, that you bring into your work that really floats your boat. So, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter.
