Out of Work, Not Out of Control: Structure = Momentum
This is part 2 of my series on working with gatekeepers. Notice, I said, “working with gatekeepers,” because implied in the, “getting past the gatekeeper.” attitude is an adversarial relationship. They have something you want, which is access, and they’re not so easy to give it to you.
The truth of the matter is, why should they? The 1st thing in shifting your attitude is to understand they are not your opponent. They can become your ally. If you are dealing with a gatekeeper, if you dealing with someone who’s there to protect the person behind them from the lunatics that are sometimes out there stealing, their time, you understand the perspective that they are in.
So, I just want you to deal with them like they are a friend, that you talking to them, not with anger or hostility or “attitude,” but you’re talking to them like they are a member of the royal family.
That’s because, at the end of the day, for that individual behind them, they are the only thing that’s saving them from nutjobs. I have to describe them is nutjobs because I get those calls so I know, what’s out there.
So, deal with them respectfully. Have fun. Have a smile on your face as you talk with them. You will discover, more often than not, you’ll get calls back and, when push comes to shove, that’s what you want –that chance to get through.
I remember I was a junior recruiter and 1 of my clients was 1 of the large New York banks and no one my office was able to get through to the hiring managers. No one in my office was able get through to HR and I was. Part of it was persistence. Part of it was the fact that I was friendly with the person who was taking messages.
Try friendliness for a change instead of trickiness.
