No BS Career Advice: November 10 2024

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

The US Presidential election is over. FINALLY!

With a change of administration, public policy toward business, taxation, climate, and its effects on business will be different from the past few years. There will soon be clarity about public policy and how it will affect hiring.

Your job between now and the inauguration is to connect (or re-connect) with people who might be able to provide you with insights, opinions about directions in your field, and, maybe job leads based on what they are hearing in their firm and elsewhere.

Fortunately, we are entering the easiest time of the year to network . . . the period between Thanksgiving and a little for New Year’s . . . when people are receptive to getting together. Use the time wisely!

I virtually met Dan Hartshorn, a senior software engineer formerly with Intel, in a class I taught for LHH last week. After connecting with him, I saw a post in my feed from him where he shared an AI prompt for tuning your resume to a particular job. This is the prompt:

I’m applying for a job. Let’s tune up my resume to align with this job description. I’ll provide the description and my resume. Don’t add keywords from the job description to my resume if are not already there. Rather, adjust the existing information on the resume to best align with the job description. For keywords in the description that are not in my resume, please list them at the end of your response so I can consider adding them if I have experience in those things. Now, prompt first to enter the job description, then to enter my resume. After I enter both, show me improvements to my resume in the summary paragraph, the career highlights section and the areas of expertise skills.

Message a note of thanks to him if you like the prompt. Suggest tweaks to him if you have those. Best of all, contact him about jobs if you know of one for him.
