People Share Many Interesting Things

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

My wife was away in England until mid-August at a teacher training program so I have been taking time to enjoy the summer alone in Western NC. The weather has been almost Florida-like–sunny and hot with late afternoon showers for a while. It also gives me time to work on a second edition to one of my books.

On a recent news post about the slowing economy and the beginning of layoffs in certain sectors, Jason Steinhauser shared a few of his thoughts about his circumstances as someone involved in a job search. I share them with you with his permission.

I’ve learned quite a bit during this whole layoff experience. Now, while I do absolutely love learning, this isn’t a method I’d choose to repeat! I’ve learned:

– I have *a lot* of respect for good recruiters. Succinct, enticing descriptions of the company and environment. Personalized introductions. I’ve sincerely appreciated that extra little flair when it’s there!

– There are a lot of market verticals I didn’t know existed, and it’s been interesting to learn *why* these problems should be solved.

– There are a lot of products that I *don’t* understand

– I’m glad I didn’t restrict myself to specific industries. I assumed I’d only look at FinTech and healthcare companies… and I was wrong. MarTech, SEO, RevOps, data brokers, blockchain solutions, energy governance, the list goes on.

– I don’t know how salespeople do it. I’ve been pitching one of my favorite products (me!) and I’ve struggled. I called one company the wrong name. I had to clarify what type of position I was interviewing for with another. I’ve scheduled more calls/interviews in a single day than I was prepared to handle. Seriously, I want to understand how y’all have the energy and drive!

– There are so many engineers that are social and empathetic. Stereotypes can be wrong!

– I had the realization a few days ago that if I had multiple options… I’d have to turn down all but one of those companies. I don’t like breakups, and if I get in a situation with multiple offers I dread this part the most.

– I now have more faith in humanity. The tech community rallying around those seeking employment has been amazing to see. All the talented folks that have been hired into new positions has honestly made me smile nearly every time.

Everyone still in the fray, try to keep your heads up! There are a lot of great opportunities, companies, and people out there.

Since the last issue, there were two very good interviews I did for JobSearchTV.com and No BS Job Search Advice Radio with @Maya Grossman and @Mick Spiers

Maya’s is called, “Becoming the CEO of Your Career.

The one with @Mick Spiers is “Finding Purpose and Meaning at Work And Avoiding Toxic Environments”

They are each a little over 30-minutes and worth watching.

I also released a video about recession proofing your career that is under 5 minutes and has useful reminders.

I think it is a nice complement to my short book, How to Avoid Being Laid Off, Excessed, RIF’D, Terminated, Axed, Furloughed or Made Redundant: And What to Do If You Are (Job Search Essentials) available on Amazon.

On Tuesdays and Fridays, I do a LinkedIn Live at 1 PM Eastern called “Career Coach Office Hours.” If you have questions that you would like me to answer, if you are available to do it live, you can put them into chat. If not, message me. I’ll answer them and you can watch them later.

One final thing I wanted to share is a video YouTube served up to me where Dr. Milton Friedman discusses inflation. It is less than 15 minutes. Watch it when you have a minute.

I hope you enjoyed this issue. Whether you did, share it and/or leave a comment. I learn from you.
