Job Search Networking for Introverts

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

In this video, Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter explains to introverts and extroverts where to go to network and how to improve your networking.

I wanted to provide you some no bs jobs search advice designed to help you with your networking. For many of you networking is a real problem. You think of yourself as being introverted.  Shy. What’s the point of doing all this stuff? Yada yada.  Now, if you’re an introvert, I just want to simply say there are great places to practice and to learn to express yourself more freely.
I’m not suggesting you change your internal dynamics or change your personality. I’m just suggesting that being able to communicate effectively is a great professional and personal skill. And, when you hold yourself back, and don’t work on improving this capability, you’re hurting yourself.  So, I want to encourage you to go to a Toastmasters meeting, and, in going to Toastmasters, follow their program. They’ll probably start off the meeting with what they call Table Topics.
You’ll be asked to speak extemporaneously for a couple minutes on a topic that they just pop in your lap, and you have to talk about it.  Eventually, you’ll get to a place where you our doing actual speaking from a podium. All of this will help you with your confidence. Now, the next part of this is networking. Because once you as an introvert, have practiced speaking more freely, I want you to continue working with that and put it into some real life situations
Where do you find networking events to go to? Our old friend Mr. Google or Mr. Bing, or Ms. Google or MS Bing is going to be the source of the answer.  Go to the search box in whatever your favorite search engine is, enter these words, job search networking event.  Then, put in your town.  You will find lots of different thing.  Then, put in the month and the year.
So, you might say job search networking event, New York, New York, January, whatever, the year is.  You’ll see a list returned to you of events that are in January. Now, this is an imperfect list.  It may include things that use some of those key words, but not necessarily the direct phrasing.
Next thing you want to do, and particularly with Google, you want to make sure you get to page 2. Why? Page one is Google’s attempt to optimize for what they believe that you want. Page 2 and beyond puts that aside and gives you some pure results. So, always make sure that you go to page 2, page three or page four, page five all the others for your town to look for networking events that are relevant, and then go.  Go to these events, practice speaking with people.  Connect.  Talk.
You’ll find that there are businesses that are looking to hire.  There are people that are looking to hire.  Information that you are going to learn by going.
