Missed Opportunities

Missed Opportunities

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

I am compelled to start by saying that this is not a post about politics.

President Trump spoke to the nation about his thoughts about building a wall to protect the southern border of the United States, the humanitarian crisis he says is occurring, the effect, the lack of a public policy to defend the border and more.

Speaker Pelosi and Leader Schumer (they felt obligated to tell us how they are to be referred to with them addressing one another with their titles) followed with a defense of their opinions.

I have rarely seen politicians completely whiff on an opportunity to grandstand in front of a camera. All three were remarkably flat and boring. President Trump couldn’t inspire while reading from a teleprompter. He should have interrupted himself and said, “The part of this job I hate is calling families after someone is killed by someone who shouldn’t have been in the country in the first place. I break down and cry in The Oval Office when I get off the phone and sometimes while I am talking to the surviving family member.”

Speaker Pelosi and Leader Schumer could have each said something that would have touched the hearts of Americans, too. “We, too, weep, when Americans are slaughtered by gun violence. We have also attempted to increase legal immigration to the US and created both a guest worker program, and ways to verify the circumstances of people coming to our borders but have met with opposition from the President. We want a safe nation. We believe there are so many hardworking people who are already here working next to citizens, paying taxes, contributing to the nation’s success . . . “

Instead, two people who looked like wood stood before us to rebut the wooden President.

Always remember to inspire your staff. Do things to create love for you and everyone, not animus and discouragement.

People are prepared and willing to do great things when inspired. They conspire and undermine when they aren’t inspired.
